You’ve packed your bags and have a few more sleeps until that long-awaited summer trip, but have you made sure you know everything you need to know about protecting your child from sun? We’ve got you covered!
A strong SPF
A child’s SPF should be no less than 15, we recommend a SPF of 30-50. You should apply sunscreen to your child’s face, shoulders, ears, cheeks and the tops of their feet – every part of their body that is exposed to the sun should be covered in SPF repeatedly throughout the day. Remember, if your child is a little water baby, that their SPF should be waterproof! Once they’ve been in the water, it’s important to reapply the sunscreen after towelling.
When the sun has his hat on...
It’s time for your child to get their hat on! A floppy hat with a wide brim will shade their face as well as their neck. Wearing a hat is one of the most important ways of warding off UV damage and protecting your little one from any harsh rays.
Keep them shaded
Babies under the age of six months should be kept out of direct sunlight – it’s just not worth it! Sit your family somewhere where there’s a large umbrella to keep them shaded all day. For older children, avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun’s rays are at their strongest.
Another useful way to protect your child from the sunshine is covering them up in loose clothing, an over-sized t-shirt with sleeves works wonders for sun protection. Light-weight fabrics such as cotton and linen are great as your child will keep cool and still be able to swim with no fuss!
Sunshine & sunnies
The skin around your child’s eyes is also vulnerable to UV damage so we suggest buying a pair of children’s sunglasses to protect your little one’s eyes from the sun. Wraparound styles are perfect as they cover as much skin as possible!
